School guide

Ermysted’s Grammar School

An updated guide to the selective Year 7 route for this boys’ grammar school in Skipton.

A selective application process

Families must register for the school’s entrance test and also make the normal secondary-school application through their local authority. Passing or meeting the required academic standard does not automatically guarantee a place when the school is oversubscribed.

A changed test for 2027 entry

Ermysted’s has announced a new entrance test for pupils hoping to start Year 7 in September 2027. The assessment draws on English and maths content from the Key Stage 2 curriculum taught by the end of Year 5, with an emphasis on applying knowledge and solving problems.

The school provides its own familiarisation information. Families should use that material and the determined admissions policy rather than relying on older descriptions of GL Assessment papers or historic pass-mark calculations.

Catchment and oversubscription

The determined policy explains how qualifying applicants are prioritised, including the role of catchment and other oversubscription criteria. Check the current policy carefully for the year in which your child will apply.

How tuition can support preparation

The most useful preparation is a secure foundation in English and maths, the ability to explain reasoning and enough confidence to approach unfamiliar questions calmly.
