School guide
North Halifax Grammar School
A current overview of the joint Halifax Grammar Schools registration, testing and application process.
Year 7 admissions
North Halifax Grammar School is a mixed selective school. It admits 180 students into Year 7, with places awarded under its published admissions policy.
One joint test process
NHGS operates a joint registration and admissions-test process with The Crossley Heath School. A child applying to either or both schools sits the same Halifax Grammar Schools assessment.
The current school information describes multiple elements across two tests. For 2027 entry, the joint process has moved to a Future Stories assessment of English, maths and creative writing based on Key Stage 2 learning through the end of Year 5.
Registration is only one step
Parents and carers must register for testing directly through the joint process, then also apply for a school place through their home local authority.
Meeting the academic standard does not guarantee a place. Offers depend on the admissions policy and oversubscription criteria.
Preparing constructively
Useful preparation focuses on fluent maths, careful reading, vocabulary, clear written expression, problem solving and confidence. Elizabeth can use the free assessment to identify which foundations need attention first.
