Learning and confidence

The lesson flew by

How one child’s interest in paper aeroplanes became a purposeful, fast-paced maths lesson.

Play and curiosity can be powerful routes into learning. They help children explore, solve problems, take manageable risks and build confidence.

One-to-one tuition can follow the learner

Elizabeth keeps a wide range of books, worksheets and practical resources for different ages, abilities and ways of learning. In a private lesson, the work can be structured entirely around the student’s needs.

From paper planes to decimals and graphs

One Year 4 student was fascinated by paper aeroplanes. Rather than treating that interest as a distraction, Elizabeth used it to build a full maths lesson.

  • Measuring flight distances.
  • Writing and comparing decimal numbers.
  • Converting measurements.
  • Using column addition.
  • Working out averages.
  • Turning the results into a graph.

The pair tested their planes, compared the results and kept applying new maths to answer a question the student genuinely cared about. The whole lesson flew by.

Confidence grows through successful experiences

One enjoyable lesson does not change a child’s feelings about maths overnight. But repeated experiences of understanding, applying knowledge and succeeding can gradually change what they expect from themselves.

That is why Elizabeth works on confidence alongside knowledge: children need both to show what they can do.
